Integrated environmental risk assessment of rare earth elements mixture on aquatic ecosystems

چکیده

Rare Earth elements (REE) have become essential in strategical sectors such as high- and green-technologies. Their increasing use human activities worldwide leads to anthropogenic REE releases detectable all compartments of the environment, transforming into emerging contaminants. However, their potential impacts on ecosystems are still poorly understood. In order a comprehensive understanding ecotoxicology properly assess environmental risk, we analysed toxicity three representative (neodymium Nd, gadolinium Gd, ytterbium Yb). Following recommendations European Chemicals Agency, assessed hazard by performing standard ecotoxicological tests freshwater species belonging different trophic levels (algae, crustacean fish). EC50 were calculated using modes expression exposure concentration (based nominal, measured total dissolved concentrations) more accurately determine toxicity. get closer conditions, also tested mixture because them occur naturally environment. Moreover, added organic matter (DOM) test medium DOM is ubiquitous drives speciation systems. The Results showed that significantly reduced bioaccumulation toxicity, probably formation non-bioavailable REE-DOM complexes. algal was most sensitive REE. Despite slight differences between Gd Yb behaviour bioaccumulation, exhibited comparable additive effects organisms. Thus, considered uniform group and, for first time, used values concentrations risk (instead considering separately). results revealed currently limited wastewater treatment plants, industrial mining activities, where released quantities can induce severe damage exposed risks likely widespread future expected increase.

Rare Earth Elements Profile

Definitions and characteristics The rare earth elements (REE) (sometimes referred to as the rare earth metals) are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements, including the 15 lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. The lanthanides are elements spanning atomic numbers 57 (lanthanum, La) to 71 (lutetium, Lu) (Table 1). The lanthanides all occur in nature, although promethium, the rarest, only...

Risk assessment of environmental mixture effects

In the environment, organisms are exposed to a diverse array of chemicals in complexmixtures. Themajority of approaches that aim to assess the risk of environmental chemical mixtures, including those used by regulatory bodies, use toxicity data generated from the individual component chemicals to predict the overall mixture toxicity. It is assumed that the behaviour of chemicals in a mixture ca...

Ecotoxicological Risk Assessment of Pesticides in Aquatic Ecosystems

With the goal of providing food for the human race as well as having a stable food supply at present and in the future, agricultural chemicals (i.e. pesticides) are being disseminated as economically effective methods for preventing reduced yields in crops due to damage by insects and weeds. The pesticides are roughly divided from their targets into insecticides which include insect growth regu...

Assessment of potential aquatic herbicide impacts to California aquatic ecosystems.

A series of legal decisions culminated in 2002 with the California State Water Resources Control Board funding the San Francisco Estuary Institute to develop and implement a 3-year monitoring program to determine the potential environmental impacts of aquatic herbicide applications. The monitoring program was intended to investigate the behavior of all aquatic pesticides in use in California, t...

Earth System Modeling—An Integrated Assessment Tool for Environmental Studies

This paper overviews a wide spectrum of influences on the Earth’s climate system. These include external effects, such as variations in the solar energy output, and internal influences. Internal influences include both natural and human-caused effects. The feedbacks associated with the Earth’s climate system are nonlinear and occur over a range of time and space scales. As a result, our ability...
